Question by Michael B: I’m building a mud room within a garage. How should I provide support for a floor that is 18″ above ground?
I’m building a mud room within a garage. I would like the floor to be level with the family room which leads to the garage. This means the mud room floor will be approx 18″ above the concrete floor in the garage. I can attach floor joists to two garage walls, but I’m concerned with how I will provide support on the non-garage walls. I was thinking about using 2″x8″ joists, 3/4″ plywood flooring and 1/4″ cement board for the tile. Given the weight associated with the above (not to mention the walls), how should I provide the necessary support? Use the same technique used with decks and run joist supports attached to 4″x4″ posts which sit on those concrete blocks? Am I crazy thinking I can use a raised floor?  Read more...

WHITE PLAINS — The ceiling sign next to White Plains High School’s main office reads “Build it,” and a look downhill from the back of the school showed something building Wednesday. Piedmont and Weaver were playing an elimination game in the area softball tournament, which White Plains was hosting by virtue of its regular-season title. The Wildcats were to play the winner under the lights.
